When they block msn messenger?

My boss wants to block ONLY msn messenger, at the office, and the guy who programed the server said, in order to do that he has to also block, IE and hotmail, is this true?

  1. Nope. Not true.

    He can use the firewall to stop MSN Messenger from connecting to the net, and have a virus program to stop the program from running.


  2. Not exactly.  Internet browsers (all of them) use port 80, IM's use a range of ports, including port 80.  If you block the other ports, the IM will work, but people won't be able to send or receive messages.

    The ports can be blocked by the company's firewall.

    Legally, the company owns the computer you use, the e-mail you get on it, and the messages.  People can be sacked for misuse, and there are plenty of cases where this has happened.

  3. You are asking whether someone we don't know is lying or telling the truth about his own (or his network's) capabilities. How could we possibly know?
