Everyone has been talking about the filly that was euthanized after being injured during the Kentucky Derby. Just got me to wondering what they did with the bodies of these thoroughbreds, do they bury, cremate, or sell the body for meat.

  1. They make bottles of glue.  And some of the meat goes into dog food.

  2. When my thoroughbred died, I had his body cremated.

  3. The lucky ones are euthanized, the others that just don't win, or are worn out are sold at killer auctions, for horse slaughter, for human consumption abroad.  yes other countries love to eat our horses. slaughter is it, that is not humane euthanization. research Ferdinand, he won the derby, he got roses, see what he got in the end.

  4. The euthanizing agent makes the horse carcass unsuitable for consumption - Secondary deaths can result from consumption of such meat. Ethically, the carcass should be disposed of as bio-hazardous waste - Cremation is common.

  5. I imagine that depends on what the owner wants to do.  I bet some are turned into glue, some dog food, some cremated and some probably go on sale for the local Chinese restaurants.

  6. Euthanized animals are not for human consumption you have to be slaughtered in a way approved by the FDA.

Euthanized animals are cremated or buried or donated to a vet school for teaching or studying purposes...

I would guess Eight Belles would be buried back on her owners land depending on how much she meant to him or her.

  7. I was curious about that same question that you had, therefore I did some research on this subject.I have a link for you below,I hope it answer all your questions. Take care.

  8. If the horse dies while on the race track grounds - whether from accident, breakdown or illness - it is usually required to be autopsied by a state vet.

Afterwards, most are cremated or rendered. Some are burried on their owner's properties, although not all are able to do this.

The owner of Eight Belles asked that her remains be cremated after the necropsy. He was very fond of her and I imagine he want s to find a special place for them.

  9. Traditionally, when a racehorse dies only the head (for intelligence), heart (for strength), and feet (for power) are buried. A very few horses, such as Secretariat and Ruffian, were buried whole, which is considered a high honor.  Barbaro was cremated, and I believe Eight Belles' owner has requested that she be cremated as well.

  10. I think it's up to the owner.

  11. Eight Belles will be cremated once the autopsy is done.
