  1. The first answer was great, with the 'jobs' of the two wheels.  Some tires do come as dual purpose, and usually have arrows on the sidewalls for installation.

Generally front tires have somewhat of an 'arrow' design, so looking at the tire from the riding position, the patterns tend to  'point' forward.  And the rear, like what was said before is for propulsion and have lateral patterns for gripping and essentially pushing the ground.

A classic pair of tires with a great example of the difference is the Panaracer  Dart (front) and Smoke (rear).

  2. Some tire designs are front tire or rear tire specific. In that case, they are clearly marked as such. Most tire designs do not differentiate between the front and rear tire.

  3. Yes. I'm not up to date on all the technical innovations, but consider the different requirements between front and back. The rear provides your propulsion and the front provides your steering. Ask at the bike shop for their recommendation, depending on the type of terrain you will be riding.

  4. Yes... sometimes.  Higher end tires are specific, but not all.  You have to check the package and ask somebody at the store at which you are buying the tire.

  5. For the "run of the mill" mountain bikes that you get at WalMart or KMart, there is no difference between the rubber on the rims....

When you get into engineered mountain bikes, the ones that cost more than cars, there are differences
