all these sites say checked luggage can weight up to 50lbs to be free, and you can have 2 pieces of luggage.

does that mean you can have 2 suitcases weighing 50lbs each or 2 suitcases weighing 50lbs total?

and how often does your checked luggage get lost and what can you do if it does get lost? if all i have is clothes in there, it'd be nice to know the airline will compensate you for your loss due to their neglect.

  1. 50lbs per bag and 2 bags for coach travel, 70lbs and 3 bags for first class.  anything over the limit and you will have to pay, depending on how overweight it is. just bring a large carry on bag with you if you think it will be over the limit and at the counter they will let you take some stuff out and put it in the carry on.

completly lost luggage is usually compensated by the pound, so use a carry on and put the expensive stuff in it and keep it with you.

  2. you can have 2 bags 50lbs each

    1-50lbs.

    bag 2- 50 lbs.

If it does get lost when u are at your desination go to Lost baggage and explain the bag (how tall it is, what it looks like etc.)

Some airlines to pay you money for your luggage.

  3. Two 50 lbs bags, means EACH bag can weight only up to 50 lbs including the weight of the bag itself. :)

As for the luggage getting lost, thankfully I have never had anything lost but it does happen. I believe they do compensate you for your belongings but by purchasing the ticket, you accept their limits stated in the Terms and Conditions. They get you with the fine print. If you have valuables you have to bring with you, take them in the carry-on bag. It will create less problems in case the suitcase is misplaced or lost. Good luck on your travels!

  4. They mean 50lbs per bag. You should be careful to check, because I know Delta has a new restriction as of May 1st for domestic flights. They reduced it to 1 bag for domestic flights, and $25 for your FIRST additional bag. Also, when deciding if to make a bag overweight, you must consider two things:

    1) how many pounds in excess of the limit will it be? Will it exceed the absolute maximum weight per bag according to the policies?

    AND

    2) Is the fee for an additional bag be more than if I just paid for an overweight bag?

I know definitely for Delta domestic, it's like $80  extra for a bag up to 20 lbs overweight, and only $25 for an extra bag (which gives you an additional 50 lbs). It's weird, I know. Then there are the companies which compounds cost. For instance, if you have an extra bag that is overweight, they'll charge you $xx for being extra, and $x*x for being overweight, so be careful of that. You should also consider the country's maximum weight regulations. Another VERY IMPORTANT note is that the airline is NOT obligated to take excess luggage, especially if they are concerned about the plane's weight, as some might carry additional cargo for special clients.

Your final question about airline responsibility, I've flown about 11 times in the past 8 months. The only time there has been a problem is when I missed a connecting flight due to a weather delay with my original flight. I was on stand-by for a different airport, but they couldn't get my luggage on the flight that night (because I wasn't sure to be on that flight, but it was 100% sure that I had a spot on the flight the next morning). When I landed, I went to baggage claim, and they gave me a claim number, and told me the approximate time that bags from the flight will be delivered.

I've lost luggage once on Air France (that's 1 bag, and I've been travelling regularly (more than 4 flights per year) over the past 15 years). I had all my clothes in the bag they lost, and I had no choice but to buy clothes in France. I documented all expenses as a result, and sent a bill to them. They refunded the cost of what I listed. I received my bag about 10 days after my flight landed. If they had completely lost it, most airlines has an insurance policy, which pays based on the weight of the luggage. I believe Delta pays about $9.60/lb, but don't quote me on that number. The second link gives you some info about lost, stolen and delayed luggage. I hope this info helps.

  5. 50 lbs each so in total it would have to be 100 lbs because theres 2 luggages per person....our luggage has gotten lost before and if dey find it....they will mail it to u....if they dont they will pay u money depending on how valuable the stuff in there was

  6. right now prepare to pay 30.00 for each piece of luggage...
