  2. "A big Hole". Not sure if your referring to a specific incident. I have had many opportunities to examine earth"layers". The easiest and most accessible would be "outcrops". Then you have vertical reliefs, where rock is exposed due to differential erosion and/ or uplift with fluvial activity. Grand Canyon and THE Palisades are good examples. Most common and prevalent method would be core samples. Drilling into area to be studied utilizing hollow pipe. The bit would consist of a substance harder than the substrate being drilled. Example- Diamond would be used for granite. The cores are then remove and provide a wealth of data from past climates to environments. Should you have more questions don't hesitate to ask.
