When throwing a spinning backfist, is there enough time to be attacked by your opponent?

For example (assume both people have roughly the same quickness)

Person one engages person two by throwing a spinning back fist. Person two tries to throw a right or tackle person one. In my experience person two either gets caught and struck by the back fist, or upon trying to engage with a punch or tackle person one's elbow hits them. What do you think, have experienced?

  1. every technique has a counter, and every counter has a counter, and a counter, and a counter...etc.

whats important is WHEN you throw such a risky technique. great rewards...but great risk too.

if you just walk out cold, first round and lead with a spinning backfist...you're gonna get KO'd ..but if you set it up...jab jab jab, cross cross, jab jab WHAM...it has a much better chance of working if the opponent is moving backward. because as David James says. "i can move faster going forward than you can going backward"

  2. Roughly the same speed in a combat? And I`m not very sure of the spining back fist.

In a short combat how do you adjust you rhyme and calculate your distance, this is vulnerable. In case, person 2 do not accept your spinning fist and throw a false tackle.

What position are you in then?

  3. Well, person two could block the spinning back fist while going for person one's back. Person two would have to react rather quickly and shoot in ready to block and tackle.

  4. A basic principle of self defnes is never turn your back to an opponent, even for an instance. While you are spining your spine and kidneys are wide open. All the person has to do is block the backfist and throw a punch at the same time.

I love people that try this sparring.

in short yes there is plenty of time for your opponent to attack you.

  5. It depends on how you set it up.  Speed is about more than just going fast.

  6. Its possible but executing the spinning back fist has more to do with timing than anything else

  7. In fighting, nothing is ever certain, and a spinning back fist is no different. It is an unexpected move and hence takes the element of surprise, but does not guarantee anything. Your opponent can simply slip your punch and counter, especially if he is watching your style and gets a feel for your foot movement.

  8. don't know what technique you learn

    (assuming im fighter #2)

coming from a chinese martial arts background i'd duck real quick,

raise my left and block head solar plexus area to avoid any kicks

and aim for your groin with my right fist

  9. Person two could just drop out of the projected path of the back-fist and throw a forward punch to the lower midsection from a squatting position.

    How about that?

    OR

From a squatting position, person two could do an ankle sweep.

  10. I have been hit with them and I have also hit others both plenty of times. It depends on what technique you throw before it, what you follow up with, and how they try to counter. If you throw this technique, take your back hand and block your side, not your head b/c your other arm will take care of that for you. They normally try to counter with a defensive kick such as a back kick or d.side kick or a reverse punch. Try to jam their kicks by being close before attempting to throw this. =)

  11. The spin is the slow part, not the back fist. Anytime you turn your back, no matter how quick you are, there is a spit second where you lose your target.  That is when they have their moment of opportunity.

The spin adds force but takes longer to generate.  Use a block or parry to lead into the spin to make the block/strike happen off the same hip turn.  It is a good combo and works to close distance also.

  12. of course but it depends on the situation.  you have to apply the appropriate techniques for the situation, that's what being a smart martial artist is all about. from my experiences from street fighting spinning moves are not advised unless you have already landed a combination and are finishing off your opponent.
