It depends.

On a single with the runner going first to third on a hit to right the second baseman will cover the bag and the shortstop will serve as the cutoff by positioning himself inside the infield to maybe catch the trail runner or an overrunning lead runner in a pickle.

On any type of extra base hit both the second baseman and shortstop will go out in case the ball gets loose in the relay and as an extra set of eyes to know where runners are.

Best advice I can really give -- Go to a game and watch the fielders when different situations happen and you can understand where to be.

usually second from right but the situation could deem that the pitcher cut. in fast pitch if the pitcher cuts from the circle the runner can not change directions until the pitcher makes an attempt to make a play. the pitcher can make the runner from third go as far as she feels comfortable before she makes a throw. so if she lets her get half way the runner is at best in a run down situation. from center if the ball is in the left field area then short covers if in right field area then 2nd covers if pretty much dead center it should have already been discussed between 2nd and short who has bag and who is cutting. arm strength of the person cutting should come into play here.

well the way I've always been taught pretty much anything to the right of second base the second baseman is cut off anything left of the bag is taken by shortstop at least when you are going to 3rd
