  1. Historically the reason 40 yard dash times are so unreliable is because they usually start the clock when the runner moves.

    Hand time is faster than electronic timing and 40 yard time is even faster than that.


  2. I think now they use those laser timers, which basically begin and stop timing when you pass the beginning and end thresholds. They are definitely more accurate than hand timers. Also, the ready set go method (gun) is becoming less used mainly because the reaction time for responding to that command takes .2 seconds, of which is very valuable time in a 40yd dash. Thus, for more accurate times, they use the lasers that just begin and end when you pass the laser sensors, so as to discount the .2 seconds due to reaction time for a gun.
