Question:

When to 60lob and when to use 52 volkey gap?

I have been limiting my use of my adams 60degree lob to a maximum of 20 yards from the pin. I get a lot of height and arc with the lob.

I have been using my 52 volkey when further then 20 yards out.

I can chip with both as I do a half swing. The problem I have is that my 52 degree gives me more run on chip shots and my 60 leave me short alot.......

When do you use either?

  1. Use your 60 on shots over bunkers or when you have little green to work with, the will bounce once and stop usually. A 52 is used when you have some green to work with, it will land soft and roll out so you want to pick a target depending on the green uphill or downhill and let it roll out. Practice with them and you'll start to see what each club will do. Have fun.

  2. I never use a 60.  I lay my 56 wide open to get virtually the same amount of loft.  I use my 56 98% of the time.  Use a pitching wedge to get the ball rolling immediately.  I chipped one in on a par 5 with my pitching wedge for birdie off the green.  The ball hit and rolled and went straight into the cup as I envisioned it.  Maybe because I'd done it before.

  3. try your pitch shots with your lob wedge a little farther back in your stance.  this will help you not have those "short"  shots as often.  it decreases the club face angle but increases your spin rate.  it'll take some getting used to, but it's helped me.

for the past 8 years or so i've used my 60* from 100 yds and in.  doesn't matter where i'm at (except for the longer chips/pitches that i have a lot of green to work with).  it's just what i'm comfortable with now and i doubt i'll ever change it.

    good luck!

  4. It's nice to have all the wedges but before you get too involved learn to hit shots on the practice range. You are supposed to get high shots with the lob wedge . Unless you have a grooved swing and practice, you probably can do much better with the pitch and run or the normal pitch shot with the pitching wedge.. Lob wedge shots  usually have to carry an obstacle to a short pin position when you want the ball to stop dead..  The gap wedge is for a longer shot. Just because Tiger and Phil use the clubs, remember that they are professionals.
