When to give juice for constipation?

Noah's constipated... AGAIN! I don't know why because he's on the same formula and nothing's changed in his diet. We have some juice but how often do I give this to him? Also, how much? I was told to mix an ounce of juice with two ounces of water so it's diluted.. is that good?

Ahh.. the joys of motherhood. :)

  1. I'd give it to him in the moddle of the day around nap time but try not adding as much water. The only reason they tell you to add water is so they dont get diareah.  You dont want him to get that either so add some water just not as much. And if he isnt on formula with iron....get him on some or have him take baby vitamins with iron. You can find them at a local store like wal mart or your pharmacy (if this is a common problem). Iron helps with constipation. GOOD LUCK.

  2. When Emily first starting getting really constipated I would do two ounces 100% pear juice to two ounces of water. It seemed to help greatly but would sometimes make her stools too loose.

I gradly lessened her to 1 ounce of juice to three ounces of water. That helped to even things out quite a bit.

Now I've weaned her down to just water (about a month later). She still poops regularly. I think she misses the flavor of the juice though, so sometimes I add a couple squeezes of lemon juice to her bottle to give it some flavor.

  3. I would add a teaspoon of prune juice to my daughter's bottles.  I had the exact same issue (still do at age 2 1/2).  My doctor adviced me to not exceed 1 tablespoon of prune juice per day.  I guess that would depend on your baby's age and weight... I think my daughter was about 5-9 months when I started doing this.

  4. Sounds like you have him on a formula that isn't so gentle on his little tummy..  I wouldn't recommend juice for babies under a year, however your Dr may have some suggestions..  Call his nurse for more info.

  5. Have you ever tried 1 tsp. of karo syrup in a bottle of water or in his formula?  Worked for my daughter when she had this 2 months ago.  Also my doctor said with it being so hot she could have been dehydrated so he recommended putting it in water, not the milk because if you do the milk they like the taste and will want all their bottles sweet.

  6. My daughter would also get very constipated.  My ped. recommended 1 tsp of dark kayro syrup in her morning bottle.  Worked like a charm!!!

  7. yes that is the proper dilution. you could also try 1-2 drops of pepermint oil in a warm bottle of water. or let him suck on a candy cane. i would make a 4 ounce bottle (2-2) and he will go to town.

if you are unsure about allergies check for a diaper rash and hives after he drinks it. (my daughter is allergic to apples and apple juice and that is how i found out)
