Question:

When to move the peonies?

I'm in New England. The petals are almost all fallen off. Some of the buds didn't open. I have to move them because my husband hates them. (I compare it to his insensible hatred of manitees...why?) Anyways, I bought the house 4 years ago and they always have done better than this. I suspect sabotage, a botched peony murder. I like them but am willing to move them to please him. I just don't know when.

If I have to wait, can I let him mow them down until then?

  1. Get him to let you wait till fall. When you move them you can also split them creating more lovely peonies.

Is his problem with them the ants? That's what most people don't like. Just move them farther from the house.

  2. You can move them now, or in the fall. But if you move them now, it is a very big possibility you will get no peonies this summer. But they will settle them self to where you move them by spring.

One thing you can do to help your peonies out this year (if you decide to leave them) is give them blood from your roast beef or hamburger. Mix the blood with water and then feed your roots with it.  Also your peonies may be lacking in water? We have had loads of rain and Ares are doing great. Mine like morning sun and afternoon shade.

Your peonies may lack Iron? There is something in blood that makes roses bloom, and I have also used it on my peonies. The result is often fast, with out a great expense to your bank account. I hope this helps!

  3. Its best to wait until  Fall  or next Spring to move the plants, however I move stuff around all the time in my garden. Peony's come back every year, and are pretty hardy.  Don't be suprised that when you replant them they look all wilty and the stems tip over from the shock.

I say go ahead and move em!

  4. i love them as well. but if they have to go then u can take them down any time. u will have to dig up the root ball as well as the plant. for moving i usually do that in late spring after the frost or early fall.
