When to send out save the date cards?

I am getting married on Dec 13,2008. When should I send out the save the date cards?

At the very least, 2 months prior to the date.  That will give you enough time to plan how many people will are coming.  You should give the people at least 3 weeks to respond.  But you should have all the numbers a month ahead, if not more so that the caterers will know how many people they are serving.  And when you get your numbers, depending on how many people you send out to, add about 10% more because you will never know how many people will just show up.  And you will also run into the problem of people RSVPing and not show up.

You should probably send them out now and RSVP by October to be safe.
