When to switch to a backless booster from a booster with a back?

Our son is 5 1/2 and soon approaching kindergarten. He has been in a booster with a highback for about a year or over now. I'm wondering when we switch to only the backless booster?

Here's our son's stats:

Weight: 50 pounds

Height: 47 1/2 inches

I would swith we did when pur son was 3 he is ready and big enough.

My daughter is just about the size your child is and she is turning 6 in one month.  I am keeping her with the back because it helps her sit up straighter and gives her more support.  I have the detachable back and will try again when she's six to see if she's more comfortable without the back.

when you go to buy the backless booster, read the box. there are several that have height and weight requirements.
