Question:

When to tell a current employer you're looking to for another job?

I really like my job and the people I work for (a company of about 30 people). However, I don't see any opportunity for advancement, and I didn't go to college to make $12.50/hour! I've been working there a year now, but I think I am going to start looking for another job as soon as 2009 rolls around. I know I am capable of doing more, earning more, and growing more in my career.

My question is, when is the right time to tell my current employer that I am looking for another job? Do I tell them as soon as I start looking? Or do I wait until I've found another job entirely? Please help!

  1. Basically, don't tell them, unless you feel comfortable enough to do it. You know the people better than we do.

I was in sort of the same situation, I had worked there for 2 years however, and was really good friends with my manager, told him that I did not see any future there and that I would be looking for something else. He understood and thanked me for it, as it gave them more time to find someone else that I could train. So it depends on the situation.

  2. Wait until you get an offer from another employer that you cannot turn down. Write a letter of resignation to your current boss telling him and HR when you plan on leaving. You can find examples of these letters online by searching "resignation letter". I completely agree with you and that is why I transferred to a different department within my company, I had moved as far as I was going to go.

Good luck with the job hunting!

  3. Wait until you find another job and get hired.

If you tell your current employer now, that you're looking for another job

your basically telling them that your not really serious about your position, and you could be taking the risk of being fired.

  4. be quiet until you get another job

  5. Don't say anything until you have another job waiting in the wings.

  6. I'd wait until you find another.  Employers frown upon people looking to leave, as they're afraid they'll sabotage equipment or something.  Don't tell them.

  7. If your primary interest is in a higher wage, talk with employer/manager now and ask for raise.  if he/swhe declines, make it known that you will be seeking employment elsewhere.

If you really want out of where you are, find another job first.

  8. Say absolutely nothing until you have a job offer.

  9. I understand why you are looking for another job however its always better to have a potential new employer verify your current employment than for you to announce your looking for a better opportunity. Its not fair but its reality. If you tell your current employer you're looking they will probably start looking themselves to replace you and this may not fall in your time frame. Congrats on your degree and keep your head up.

  10. You wait until you have another job and write your letter of resignation. In your letter you can state that you have taken a position with another company that offers more opportunities than your current position. You should absolutely never tell a current employer that you are looking for another job.

  11. I would wait until you have another job lined up. Ya know, don't count your chickens before they hatch. This way if you have trouble finding a new job it won't be a big deal. Of course give your current employer a courtesy two week notice, or more if you would like. Basically just sit down with the boss and tell him everything you just told us. Bosses are people too, I'm sure they will understand.
