  1. West: going out to

    East: going over to

  2. Going over to .....

  3. back east

    out west

  4. we're travelling towards the east or west..

  5. Where my parents live in the mountains, up and down don't refer to north and south but to elevation.  And I know on Long Island out usually refers to the eastern direction and in refers to the western direction.

  6. One travels UP North.....DOWN South......OUT West......BACK East

I could only venture a guess that the latter is a carryover from the early days of this country, when people were migratng from the East. Hence the go Out West, or return Back East. The Up North probably comes fom looking on a map, and North is Up, therefore South is Down.

  7. Depending on your location to the destination. Rarely is it directly east or west, and the default "going down" or "going up" works.

"Going over to" is the most widely used and understood for horizontal travel though.
