At such a high profile venue an apt person might take the oppourtunity to make some sort of statement. Do you think the US team might do this in Bejing?

  1. actually, the correct answer is YES.

    The athletes are considered as low level, but still official diplomats.

    That they don't have the same responsibilities as say the Ambassador, does not mean they are not representing the country.

    Now, if any do make a statement?

    how would it be possible to prevent anyone from making statements?
