When travelling a highway in the mountains, u may c elevation signs that read "914m(3000ft)".?

critics of the metric system claim that such numbers show the metric system is more complicated. how would u alter such signs to be more consistent with a switch to the metric system?

  1. It is likely that the height in feet has been ROUNDED OFF to 3000 ft and the metric equivalent of 3000 is listed. ( Actually, the foot listing is probably good to only two significant figures and the metric number is erroneously thought to be good to three. )

    Were there to be a switch to the metric system, the rounded-off numbers would be for metric numbers such as 1000m and the sign would be put at some distance from the present one such that it made sense and was (reasonably) accurate.


  2. Show the metric equivalent as the nearest hundred or thousand rather than the US customary. So a sign that reads 62 mi (100 km) makes the Metric side look cleaner. Use this only with numbers that are easily remembered (3280 ft / 1000 m) and soon people will start to remember them and hopefully employ a little math to convert.
