When trying to achieve muscle tone which is more effective- more weight +fewer reps OR less weight +more reps?

I am interested in toning up and getting some definition in my muscles while still staying lean. I have been going to to gym and using the weight machines. I have heard that doing fewer reps with more weight is better than more reps with less weight, but I have also heard that the opposite is true. I dont want to get big and bulky so which method will be most effective for getting the toned and lean look I am after?

  1. For toning, less weight and more reps will give you a lean, muscular look.  More weight and less reps will add bulk.

    You should also consider adding in yoga, cycling, pilates or a martial arts program to really help give you a lean, toned look.
