When trying to conceive how much folic acid due u need in your diet?

i have recently been working out because a fried of mines told me that when your trying to conceive its best to try and loose so weight and i am a little over. So i started doing taebo and Pilate's in the morning along with jogging 2 miles. eating healthy and drinking lots of water... i take one a day weight smart which contains 400mg of Folic acid and then i take a folic acid dietary supplement that has 800 mg. is this to much?

  1. Folic Acid is water soluble meaning you eliminate it however, taking high amounts can overload the liver and un-metabloized folic acid floats around the body which can cause serious problems.  

    The fetal problems prevented by folic acid is thought to be caused by a deficiency so taking a multi-vitamin will be enough to protect your future child.  


  2. Hi im also ttc & taking 400mcg of folic acid a day in tablet form.You can get folic acid from foods but your better off taking a supplement as its not likely you'll get enough from food. Once your pregnant you should be taking atleast 800mcg a day it doesnt matter how much you are taking as long as you are taking it.But as you probably already know its not good to change your diet & exercise whilst trying to get pregnant or whilst pregnant. It puts unneeded stress on your body.

  4. Are you sure its 400mg and not 400mcg or 0.4mg ?? That seems like an awful lot, as I took a prenantal vitamin that had 1mg of folic acid and my doc said that was perfect (it was the prenatal vitamin that had the most). I read that you should take 0.4mg or 400mcg of folic acid when trying to conceive.
