Question:

When two cars try to switch to the same middle lane simultaneously, which one has right of way?

When there are 3 lanes and the cars on both the right most lane and the left most lane tries to change to the middle empty lane at exactly the same time, neither is ahead of one another. Now, I live in a left driving side country and my friends suggested that the right (the faster lane) should have the right of way. I tend to think the same but based on the fact that it is a courtesy for the left lane guy to let the right go first simply because he can see better (sitting on the right side of the car) What are your thoughts?

  1. I would neither has the right of way because both of the cars would need to have checked their blind spots to make sure that it was clear before moving over.......

  2. i would say the person on the right, and ill tell you why, when i went through drivers ed, i was always taught that the person on the right has the right of way.  however, both drivers would need to check blind spots and also look over their shoulder in order to see if it was clear.  This ordeal should be solved by simple defensive driving and also communication between the 2 vehicle drivers.  the only other thing i can think of is if one of the lanes just merged onto the highway but i don't think that is part of your question so i will leave it at that.

  3. The BIGGER one.

  4. neither one has the right of way. both drivers are to make sure the lane is clear before moving into it<

  5. In right side driving countries, when two cars are on an intersecting course, and arrive at the same place at the same time, the car on the right has the right of way.  This rule applies directly to intersections, but merging lane situations would also apply.

I would think in left driving contries, with the rationale being the same, that the car on the left would have the right of way.

  6. A vehicle in the fast (passing) lane must always yield the right of way to vehicles in slower lanes.
