Question:

When two computers are using the same router, can one of them take over more bandwidth than the other?

I have two computers at home, and I want one of them to use less bandwidth than the other. A better explanation would be that one of my computers is used for heavy internet usage, while the other one is mainly for working and reading news. So what I want is for the light user to limit it's throughput to a 1/4 of the bandwidth, leaving 3/4 reserved for Mr. Heavy! So, what would I have to do to make this work?

Thanking you in advance!

  1. Read this article http://www.pcformat.co.uk/tips/default.a...

  2. You can only do this if your router supports QOS and if its implementation allows allocation by IP address. Read its documentation.

  3. Look in your router for Quality of Service (QOS) settings.  You should be able to throttle bandwidth usage using QOS.

  4. I'm not sure why you would specifically assign bandwidth to either system, I would just allow the system to choose how much bandwidth it needs given whatever task that system is trying to perform at the time.  If you specify bandwidth then you may find that you'll have occasion to need higher bandwith on the lower system and it won't be automatically available, you'll have to reconfigure the router in order to do what you want, and frankly I just don't see that it would be anything other than a make work project.
