  1. no

By the way, despite what another poster wrote, in traditional kung fu, such as Northern Style, Seven Stars Praying Manitis kung fu, there is no clolored sash system.

  2. No

  3. no...thats an old myth. you dont have to...you never did have to.

you CAN. but it's pretty dumb, because if you ever have to defend yourself ...you are now using an (admitted) deadly weapon.

    don't do it.

  4. You would need to look up the laws where you live to answer that question. What amazes me is that a street fighter who could beat most black belts to a pulp does not have to register their fighting skills with the authorities, but a black belt may have to in some places.

  5. NO, and more importantly, Why would you?

Even if the government told me that I had to register there is no way that I would. Anyone who would register themselves as a weapon is a fool.

A good rule of thumb is never tell them what you got until you've already hit them with it.

  6. It's not that you have to register with the police, but when you go to court for crippling or killing a person in self defense and you are registered with a school as a black belt you will be held responsible for your actions. Not necesarily fairly, but they will be skeptical about your "choice" of seriously hurting your attacker. There are actually a lot of cases where instructors and black belts have been sued and lost because of their "officicial" level of skill that supposedly gave them a choice between "peaceably subduing" an attacker and killing him. Whatever, but that's the law for you.

  7. I have heard this myth most of my life. I have never been asked to register. The head of our organization is a high ranking police officer. He is responsible for training officers in self defense. We routinely hold clinics on restraining and handcuffing suspects. If there was any truth to the myth he would be obligated to have us registered.

The others the answered are correct that if a trained martial artist hurts or kill someone in self defense they are likely to be sued and serve jail time. The theory(law) is that because we are trained fighters we should show more restraint. There is a small gray area of what is self defense and when is it no longer self defense. If I have disarmed you and continue to punish you I am no longer defending myself. I am now the law breaker. It would take a lot more time to explain that law. We can only meet force with the same amount of force.

  8. No it is a myth, but if you ever do hav to defend yourself from an attack, it will probably play a factor in the proceedings that happen after.

  9. There is no such thing in the U.S.A.  I've been hearing that myth since the 1960's.

  10. It may very well depend on what country you live in.

You don't have to in the USA.

a 1st degree black belt in Kempo Karate

and a 1st degree black belt in Shotokan...

I am not registered with the police, and I don't have to

  13. no . . . i did not when i got my black belt

  14. In the USA there is no federal law.  It may vary from state to state, but here in California you do not have to.  I have heard some states might require you to, but that was hear say.
