  1. It truly depends upon the situation.

Some celebrations, the gift opening is part and parcel of the celebration... i.e. bridal showers, baby showers, birthdays, Christmas.

Other times, it is not... i.e. housewarming, hostess gifts, wedding receptions, funerals (gifts in the forms of food items and such!).

A good general rule of thumb would be... if the gift-giving is a "private" and personal thing, then the opening should be, too.

    Have a polite day.

  2. Later, I don't want to see their reaction.

  3. I personally don't mind but a lot of people do prefer that the others open it there and then.. I guess it's polite to open it right away.. then the other person can see what was bought and if they really like it.. they will say how much they appreciate the gift.  that makes the gift giver happy that the gift was a success and that it was appreciated and it makes the recipient happy to have received a thoughtful gift.. and he or she can express his or her thanks directly to the gift giver.. and a great smile and a sincere thank you may count for more than a card later on.. when you don't see the real reaction to the gift.. if the joy over a gift is genuine then it's a nice feeling for the person who went through the trouble to select a gift..  and also nice for the person who received it.. as it shows him or her that he or she is thought of and considered special by the gift giver .
