  1. It depends. Is your horse really hard on himself in a stall? Like, always getting bumps and scrapes? Sometimes a really light sheet can help with that kind of thing (assuming you don't have a horse that destroys blankets!). Some people get nervous about horses getting tangled up in blankets, but if you have one that fits well and is adjusted properly there shouldn't be much of a problem with that. I like Turtlenecks because they get nice and snug (but not restrictive) around the neck and chest area. http://www.saddlersrow.com/store/item.as...

  2. When in a stall your horse should have a little on as possible. any extra stuff including a halter can hook up on boards and cause far more injuries than if left off. Some barns require a halter on your horse at all times. If so consider a leather halter so it will break instead of injuring the horse. NO splint boots in stalls ever. This puts pressure on the tendons that could cause a lot of problems.

As to what you should have.

*a fly mask for turn outs (warm weather) is always nice. You could also include splint boots for turn outs but I never do. (usually barns charge extra for applying any kind of gear for turn outs as well as the turnouts them self)

*brushes, hoof pick and gear should be stored in a tack box to keep your stuff as safe as possible. You will want a locking tack box to prevent accidental theft. (this is a problem when boarding.)

*blankets for cold weather. Store at home when not needed and put your name on it (well your name on everything really)

    * Not all boarding barns have a place to hook your horse to wash them but some do. Ask! if not teach your horse to ground tie.

Hope this answers your question and helps you to find the right place for you and your horse.

  3. You don't have to have boots or a blanket on your horse when stalled or out in the paddock.

I, myself think it's silly but others like to have a blanket on their horse at all times.

If you blanket your horse in the fall when it starts to get chilly (to us) then you prevent the horse from growing his natural winter coat so then you HAVE to blanket him all winter and into the spring.

There is only a couple reasons I blanket my horse

    1.  They are shivering.  That is a clear sign of being cold.

I provide lots of hay and make sure they can move around (a paddock, not stalled) to generate heat.

    2.  Had a bath and I want to prevent them from getting dirty when they roll in the dirt (which they will do each time)

    3.  A fly sheet when needed

I never use shipping boots (they get too worried with them on) and I never blanket them while trailering.

As for tying when washing...most places have a 'wash stall' but for me (I don't board) I just hold with one hand and wash with the other.  If in a jam I run the line through the D-ring on the trailer (but not tie it!!!!) to make him think he's tied.  :)

But really...boots and blankets, not needed.  Only as a stand-by 'just in case'  :)

    Unless you show :)

Just my opinion on this.  I don't show.

  4. No, horses don't need leg boots or blankets in a stall.  Even in winter, horses don't necessarily need blankets.

Most boarding stables have a place to hose down your horse.  I'm sure some don't but the majority of them do.

  5. it depends like if your boarding in the winter the barn that u have your horse in might not  have a heated barn!  then i would have a blanket on them!  but most likely you souldnt have to worry about that!  just make sure it's a nice clean place that your boarding you horse in! cuz u want the best for it!!

    hope i helped!♥
