Question:

When using an attic fan?

I have always thought if you were running the attic fan then you should open all the windows in the house.

Today my dad told me you are supposed to just crack a couple about 4 inches open. Which is true?

  1. Your dad is right, if you open the windows all the way, it will actually feel like less airflow moving through the house.  This is because opening the windows only a little creates higher air pressure and makes the air move faster once it enters the house

  2. An attic fan is normally one that removes the heat from the attic and you have to have enough "free air space" in the louvers to accommodate the fan. A "whole house fan is one that is installed in the ceiling and removes air from the house. The same principle is true as it is for an attic fan, you have to have enough air coming into the house BUT you also have to be able to exhaust the same amount of air from the attic. This can be done by installing roof turbines. In your search engine type in >>  roof turbines <<<

  3. Listen to dad.
