When waitressing how many tables do you wait at a time?

I work at a Ruby Tuesday.  On paper, the servers there should have between 3-5 tables (based on your performance).  But due to poor scheduling it's possible one may need to take more.

In my restaurant, there's only 1 person who can handle as many tables than me (more, actually).  My breaking point is somewhere between 8-10 tables.

However, different places vary.  Some places expect higher standards from their servers which can lower how many tables they can handle, and some must carry other jobs (making their own salad, bus their own tables, etc.).

I work at a buffet restaurant from 4 til close. I always have the same section of 6 tables. From 4 o'clock til 5 o'clock I take 22 tables (they are not ALWAYS full) but at times it is a challenge, at 5 my 2 back ups come in and take the other 16 tables. At 8:30 the back ups go home and again I have 22 tables.

Places all do it diffrent some places go in order and rotate through untill everyone has a table and then start over. You get what you can handle if it gets to your turne and you feel you can't handle another table you can tell them to skip you. Other places break it the tables into groups and you get a area and you get whatever sits in your area again you can give a table to someone if you get to many. They will tell you when you go in for a interview a lot of times how they do it. My mom waited tables for years and this is the most commen ways they did it at the places she worked.

I work at a corporate chain steakhouse and we have three table sections during the week and some weekend nights, usually on Friday and Saturday nights we only have two tables each. This is sort of uncommon, as this steakhouse really stresses concentrated service at each table. Also, we do not have food runners or people to fill our drinks so we really are doing it all!
