AFL was an offshoot of the former VFL, the Victorian league wanted to expand outside of their own state so invited other state footballing commissions to set up teams and join the VFL, which in 1990 became the AFL, but if you are talking about when football was first played well that was back in 1858 when Scotch Grammar and Melbourne Grammar played a hybrid game although some historians don't count this as the actual first game of football with the proper rules of football, this they say was played much later when Melbourne football club (the oldest club in the land) and Geelong football club played the first game under the rules devised by a committee of men, at the forefront was a man called Tom Wills, the actual reason for the game in the first place was to keep cricketers fit during the winter months, who back then would have envisaged that the game would develop to what we see today
