  1. 1925.

Returning to New Zealand in 1925 for what was to be his last visit, the by then Sir Ernest Rutherford, chose to use his influence in a way that showed he had not lost touch with his country. He made a plea for the government to safeguard New Zealand’s natural heritage, and called for an institute to be established to support scientific research to benefit the farmer of the country. This ultimately led to the establishment of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research in 1926.
