3 years after concluded the spanish conquer, Hernan Cortes began the construction using the material of the indian temples. It was made cathedral in 1530 and metropolitan in 1547.

As it was insifficient it was demolished in 1552 and the construction of the new one began in 1571 and finished in 1813.
