It was officially recognized by the Federal Government in 1870 as separate from the Northwest Territories.

The southern parts of Manitoba were founded from break-away counties of Minnesota and North Dakota in 1887.  The boundary was later continued along the same line as the rest of the west line.  There was only one section of Minnesota that would not agree to this treaty, which is why a portion of that state extends farther north at an awkward and unusual set of angles from the rest of the common borders.
