  1.   Before written history...which varies area by area- so there is no real tme you can put on it...The Americas were Prehistoric until the Spanish arrived, the Middle east has 5 thousand years of writing or more.

  2. The Prehistoric period refers to the period before there was written history. So whenever writing arrives in a society (it happens at different times in different societies) the prehistoric period comes to an end.

The prehistoric period for Greece and the Aegean ends sometime between 1200 and 800 BC. In Rome and the Adriatic (where the alphabet arrives a little later) it would be a few centuries after that.

Prehistory in France ends some time before Caesar wrote 'The French Campaign' about his invasion of that country - and prehistory on most of the European mainland tends to end when the Romans arrive (or shortly before).

On mainland North America prehistory lasts until the European colonists of the 15th or 16th century.

Find out when writing first appeared in your society: prehistory is any date before that.
