  1. South Dakota was admitted into the United States on November 2, 1889 - the 39th or 40th state admitted (admitted the same day as North Dakota).

The statehood movement finally bore fruit.

On February 22, President Cleveland signed the Omnibus Bill creating the States of North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, and Washington.

Dakota Territory formally ceased to exist on 2 November when President Harrison signed the documents formally admitting North and South Dakota to the Union as the 39th and 40th states.

Harrison purposely shuffled the documents as he signed them so that no one would know which state was admitted first.

Pierre is chosen as the temporary capitol of South Dakota.
