  1. central western Europe, France Germany austria Italy during the 1600-1800's , at the time everybody who could afford do did

The ones I have been to seem to have alot of older well off people

  2. More people go to operas today then ever, because it has expanded to counties like China, etc.  "The Barber of Seville","Porgy and Bess", and operas of that stature are performed everywhere.

Opera is an art form in which singers and musicians perform a dramatic work (called an opera) which combines a text (called a libretto) and a musical score. Opera is usually seen as part of a classical music tradition. Opera incorporates acting, scenery and costumes, sometimes includes dance, and is accompanied by an orchestra or small musical ensemble. If you like singing, acting, music . . . you may like opera.

A great variety or 'type' of people go to operas. I have been to a large opera house in my tux "putting on the Ritz" so to speak and small gatherings in taverns wearing casual dress while singers sang arias  people sat around drinking vino, laughing and stomping their feet in appreciation and just having a good time.

  3. 1600-1800s mostly the wealthy enjoyed the opera
