  1. Nobody really knows.  Recent evidence shows that robotic devices were known prior even to the rise of the Roman empire.

  2. GOOGLE "I Robot"... it's the first time the word was used... oh.. and it's a BOOK... one of the most famous SciFi books, in fact.

  3. Asimov did not coin the word, a Czech playwright used it first, although he credited his brother, although Robota existed in various East European languages meaning hard, repetitive work.

Cut and paste from OED's etymology

[Czech, f. robota forced labour; used by Karel {Cbreve}apek (1890-1938) in his play R.U.R. (‘Rossum's Universal Robots’) (1920).]

Actual robots or automata pre-date history according to Britannica Archytas of Tarentum made a mechanical pigeon in the 4th century BC.

  4. Issac Asimov

    SF writer

    1920's (my guess)

  5. It depends on your definition of Robot.

There where Automatons created by Greek, Roman and Chinese civilisations date back almost 2000 - 2300 years which where a form of robot, however these where extremley simple crude machines.

More Robots where then made towards the 16th and 17th centuries in Europe as toys and novelties for the rich and Monarchs of the times, however these again where basic and not really up to much.

With the Industrial Revoloution in the 18th Century more complicated machines where created which can be called Robots as they did not need a man to really be there to control the machine all the time, just feed it wood and coal to keep boilers working and basic maintenace whilst the machine done the work, this was a more advanced robotic style machine.

Of course as Mechinization grew and production lines came into force more and more machines became more and more advanced, in the 1910s - 1930's more and more ideas of what a true Automated machine or being started to be branded about, but again the concept of control was always the issue.

The was advanced the electronic field and really pushed the boundaries of robotics further, more automated machines, simple computers started to be created, valve technology became more dominant, more and more smaller circuits where devised and then the first transistors became availiable at the end of the war, this meant that more independant robotic machines where developed.

Which leads us into the electronic age advancing to the late 60's and early 70's when robots where truly developed, the microchip revoloution in the 80's has pushed robotics so hard that now so many are remarkable and in the next 10 to 50 or so years someone will no doubt come up with the real robot dream of an Android.

    Hope this helps
