  1. I don't think anywhere ever says (although I may well be wrong on that). He was martyred  (died) around AD40-AD44, so if you figure that was was roughly middle-aged or older when he died, you can make a rough guess at when he was born.

try these for more info: http://www.csj.org.uk/apostle.htm and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_James...

  2. Both James and his brother, John, must have been roughly the same age as Jesus because  their mother, Salome, was the sister of the Virgin Mary, which made them the Lord's first cousins.  Jesus especially favored James, John, and Peter since they were the only disciples privileged to see the Transfiguration.

Even so, and perhaps because James and John were the Lord's cousins, Aunt Salome felt she could ask Jesus if her sons could sit on the right and left hand of His throne.  Here Jesus' response--that they would need to bear the burden that He would bear--is particularly telling since James was the first disciple to be martyred mentioned in the New Testament (Acts 12):  Herod Agrippa I ordered James beheaded shortly before Passover between 42 and 44 CE (different links give different dates).   James' feast day for the Western Church is July 25th (my birthday, btw), and he is the Patron Saint of Spain.

  3. We don't know exactly, but he was probably around the same age as Jesus.
