Explorer 11 took the first picture you're talking about.  It was on Aug 7th, 1959.  Looks like today is the anniversary of this photo.  :)

Remember, this is the first photo of the WHOLE earth.  It is true that the first photo from an altitude considered space was from a V-2 rocket.
