  1. The Basilica has been built from 1875 to 1914 to honor the memory of the 58,000 who lost their lives during the Franco-Prussian war which happened from 1870 to 1871.

The initial building demand came from the Archbishop of Paris wanting to "expiate the crimes of the communards". Paris had been besieged by the Prussians from September 1870 to march 1871. Once the siege over, marxists and anarchists didn't accept French defeat and briefly took control of the city. This secessionist government has been known as "Paris Commune". It's been the first marxist government in the world, and the name "communism" actually comes from it.

Today, most visitors are tourists going there mainly because it offers a great view on Paris. Generally speaking, the basilica symbolism is interpreted very negatively by locals. To them, it marks the domination of a traditionalist and clericalist movement over a city thriving for freedom and democracy. Remember that the period was actually putting an end to Napoleon III autocratic rule.

  2. It was built from 1875 to 1914. It looks like a big white wedding cake on the tallest hill of Paris (Montmartre) and is seen from everywhere.

If you have seen the film Amelie you have seen it as the film happens around it.

If you go there you have a beautiful view of the whole of Paris
