Well, I think the settlement you are asking about was in 1620.  Many of the settlers, though they sailed from Portsmouth, UK, came from Holland.  They were English, but had gone to Holland as they were Protestants, and England was Church of England, not Protestant.  The councils of the settlements ejected those who did not practise their extreme form of Protestantism, so it just "growed" in the area over time.
