Question:

When was the Depression?

was it around 1940 or 1840?? I can't remember and I need to know for a school project. Ugh...i hate school projects!! Esp. when you have to do them during the summer!

  1. Our economy has always been 'boom and bust' so there have been several recessions or depressions.  The one called the Great Depression began with the stock market crash in late 1929.  It reached its height around 1932, and that year FDR was elected and began putting programs in place to remedy it.  It tapered off slowly and didn't really end until we got into WWII in December of 1941.

    BTW the 'depression' was so called because Herbert Hoover, the president at the time, didn't want to call it a 'recession'. He thought 'depression' sounded better, more temporary.  He kept insisting 'prosperity is just around the corner', that the depression would end very soon.  But it kept getting worse through the rest of his presidency, so the nation changed parties in the next election.
