  1. 1538 by Sansovino go to http://rosswarner.com/Grand_canal.html to get more info

  2. Venice was built on lots of small islands, so in a sense all the 'canals' were there to begin with ~ they were simply the waters which separated the little islands from one another.

But over the centuries, some canals have filled in, some new ones have been created and some have been enlarged.

As well, the city has built over the edges of the original waterways, and created footpaths, cemented other parts to hide or expose the waterways, and generally created a very 'man made' environment.

The Grand Canal is wider and larger than most others probably because it originally separated some islands that were a little further apart than others.

    It's a fascinating place, isn't it :-)

    Cheers :-)

  3. It was always there.

  4. It was there the whole time

  5. It was there all the time, Venice is built entirely on water, it is built on a lagoon. The houses were built around the Grand Canal mostly in teh seventeenth century, but soem earlier.  Some of the other canals in Venice were dug out. It was more of a case of building so that the canlas resembled roads. Every house is built on stilts and embedded into the silt at the base of the water. It is the most beautiful place in the wolrd, but is sinking.....
