This is in Madrid.  I, however, know of a place in Seville that predates this one by about 50 years.  It's called El Rinconcillo(est 1670), they just don't make as big a deal out of it.  I've eaten there, and it has been in the same family since 1670.

The place in France aforementioned, may simply no longer exist.

Ok, but then I found this, under a search for the first restaurant in the world...

Now, I'm confused.   Especially since I searched El Rinconcillo, and their story is different from the one on the official Seville site, and the one given me by a friend in Seville, as well.  Looks like everything on the internet is NOT true...;)

  2. According to the information I found, it began in Paris in

1765 by a man with the name of A. Boulanger, who was a soup vendor selling to customers. He opened a restaurant

and placed a sign above the door, to advertise his business as a restaurant, offering a varied menu inside.

This was the first recorded restaurant to use a menu until

that year. By 1804 there were 500 restaurants in Paris. And

by then there were many restaurants in neighboring countries

like Germany and England with their coach houses.

Of course, pubs and taverns were available for centuries

long before that time, when travelers would stop for a pint of

brew, a loaf of bread and some cheese and meat to refresh

themselves and then be on their way again.

  3. it was in France sometime in the 1500's.  traveling people needed a place to eat.  the were not soldiers, but going to the holy land so they had women and kids with them.
