  1. 1st Test: Sri Lanka v South Africa 2006

    SA 169 & 434

    SL   756/5 declared

    In Sri Lanka's innings, Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara (who made 287) shared a partnership worth 622 for the third wicket, a new world record in first class cricket for any wicket. Jayawardene eventually made the highest score by a Sri Lankan in Test cricket. Muralitharan then bowled 64 overs, taking six South African wickets as they were bowled out midway through the afternoon session on the final day to lose by an innings and 153 runs.

  5. The last time South Africa followed on was in April 2005, when responding to the Windies 543/6d they mustered just 188, the match was eventually drawn after South Africa stubbornly held out for 161 overs.

    Windies did have the chance to enforce the follow-on in December 2007 after South Africa found themselves 213 in arrears at Port Elizabeth but captain Chris Gayle declined the opportunity.

    The last time England enforced the follow-on against South Africa was in December 1999 when 7/46 by Andrew Caddick handed England an 210-run first innings advantage. However second time around South Africa batted for 209.2 overs, Gary Kirsten playing an epic innings of 275 which lasted 878 minutes.
