  2. Great answere hawkeye!

  3. The Americans actually have a really long history in Rugby but they pretty much disappeared for 50 years between the 1920's and 1970's.  They have an overall record of 48-103-3 according to their website, with the two biggest wins (in terms of today's powerhouses) being over France back in 1920 and 1924.

Their first game was against Australia which they lost 12-8 in 1912 and then played NZ in 1913 and lost 51-3.  Those were their only games before the win over France.

They still don't play a lot of games annually with their biggest competition being in the Pacific Rim championship and the Churchill Cup which usually involves Canada, NZ Maori and a selection of UK players.

They have the population to be a powerhouse in Rugby and if they can get a consistant league up and running, then get some professional players involved, they could well be the sleeping giant of world rugby once the public realises that Rugby is a viable option to make a good living.

Oh, and to answer your question, they last played South Africa in Houston, Texas on Saturday December 1st 2001 and lost 43-20.
