  1. Are you talkign about minimum wage? Im America there is no legal set standard besides that because we're not socialist. Minimum wage varies form state to state too.  It's 8.25 an hour up here in washington state.

Hoe much more they get depends on their job and performance- I have no idea of know hat any given waitress of any given state at any given place earns.

  2. Having been a server, an industry by the way, that can be very lucrative, it depends on what you mean by a raise.  The minimum wage for servers is not even close to minimum wage for other workers for a reason; if you are good and working for a good establishment you will make good money in tips.  As a result, the wage of a server should in theory improve everytime the menu changes.

If you are working in a reputable establishment, 90% of the patrons are making 10-20% tips on there bills.  If you are working 5-6 tables an hour with an average $50 bill, you are averaging $30-$40 an hour.  In upscale and resort type settings tips tend toward the upper end, and the average bill being a bit higher $60-$80 average bill and up that adds up to a fairly decent minimum wage.

If you are a server and you are not outpacing minimum wage in tips by 4-5 times plus, it is time to find a better place to work.  A good server in a typical "name brand" resturant, should be making $100-$150 in a 5 hour weekend shift.  (5 tables/hr. x 5 hrs = 25 bills x $70 avg. bill = $1750 x 10 % = $175 (and the avg tip should be 15% or better).  That's pretty good return.

  3. I'm a waitress in PA, and I've worked at the same restaurant for 20+ years, and I make $2.83 an hour plus my tips. I couldn't tell you the last time I got a raise, it's been years. Minimum wage just went up last year, but we didn't get it. We have a bookkeeper, and if we were to get one, he would of known. So it's legal. Our boss tells us "our raise is when you are better, so the tip goes up". Well, sometimes it doesn't matter how good we are, people are going to tip the norm.

By the way, that $2.83 is gross. That is before taxes, etc. I think we figured out one time that we get about $1.87 takehome. That's pretty disguisting compared to all of the cleaning we have to do. It's one thing to just wait on customers. But there is a lot of cleaning involved for waitresses too, not counting cleaning the tables, counters.

    I think I need a new job!!!!

  4. Depends on the state.  I made 3.78 in Florida and in Michigan I make 2.65.

  5. Minimum wage recently went up to $6.50 (in Texas at least), so that is what they have to be paid at least.

I know I get paid $2.25/hour + tips.  With the tips and hourly wage I have to make at least the $6.50/hour (or the Hotel I work for has to pay me more per hour to even it out).

So to answer your question more concisely, this month, July 2008, waiters got a rase from $5.85 to $6.50, a $.65 cent raise.

  6. Government Minimum Wage just went up-July 24th, 2008. There is a Government Minimum and it varies by State too.

Ohio is higher than the Governments. Hope you got a raise.
