  1. I believe it was secretariat, I think it was like 1976? not really sure.

  2. Affirmed won it in 1978... Alydar came 2nd in every Triple Crown race that year... without Affirmed, Alydar could have won the Triple Crown himself.

Before that it was Seattle Slew in 1978 (only horse to come out of the Triple Crown undefeated!), then Secretariat in 1973.

Since then, there's been some near misses.  Silver Charm was caught in the stretch at the Belmont.  Real Quiet was nosed out at the wire.  Charismatic finished 4th before being pulled up just after crossing the line.  War Emblem took a tumble out of the Belmont starting gate and couldn't make up the ground.  Smarty Jones was caught in the stretch by Birdstone after a suicidal pace.  So Affirmed remains the last Triple Crown winner.

  3. It was Affirmed in 1978

  4. 30 years ago, in 1978, Affirmed won the Triple Crown. It's strange, because unlike his rival, Alydar, Affirmed had what has been described as a rather mediocre career at stud, whereas his rival has sired numerous champions and has proven himself to be the better horse.

  5. i was 15.....1978......the great affirmed...beat the great alydar in 3

    very exciting races.

  6. It was Affirmed in 1978.
