For the first time in years, I used a public payphone the other week, and was surprised at how much it costs to make a call! I can remember when you could make a call for 2p!

  1. I used one a few weeks ago, because I needed to ring a landline, I was outdoors and my credit was low.

And yes, it is very expenisive. I think there's like a 40p connection charge and then £1 goes in like 2 minutes. Rip off.

  2. when you could still push button b.

  3. Its been so long i cannot remeber

  4. 2p Phones - I remember them and queuing for hours outside the phones in Plymouth dockyard to ring home (I used to be in the Navy).

There are no public phones left round here, the little herberts roaming the streets blew them all up with those monster fireworks a couple of years ago and they never got replaced.

  5. I cant remember...mind you...you will be lucky to find one that works nowadays....

  6. On Monday.  I called Brum from Derby and it only cost 20p.  I remember when it was 4d.  Press button B, please.

  7. thats a tough one and i dont know

  8. In 2000/2001 I think. It's been a while!

  9. I think it was in about the early 80's, I was drunk, depressed and phoned up the Samaritans cos I was fed up with life, well I'm still here twenty odd years later so they must've been good at their job!LOL

  10. Blimey ! Good question. 2p !! Was it when you had to push the money down and it went whirrrrrrr ? I haven't used a public phone for about 10 years. I hate the smell of pee.......

  11. I still use them almost weekly. I just moved and don't have a landline yet, and I have had "bad luck" with cell phones, so I don't use them. I still think there is a need for the old fashion payphone, and hope they still plan to keep them around.

  12. Many years ago. I don't remember it being 2p.It was 4d. Remember those, big copper coins. Press button A then button B.

Seriously, about 10 years ago I used public phones.

I have used public phones to ring home from France when my mobile didn't work. That was only a couple of years ago.

  13. It's been years...and from what I can remember, I wouldn't like to use one ever again.

I can remember the smell of them and the stink of wee in the phone box...yuk!

  14. I tried to use one about 6 weeks ago when I got locked out without my phone.  I walked all the way to the payphone to find a sign saying this phone no longer accepts coins!  They complain they don't get as much custom anymore but that is just turning people away!
