  1. While I can't say when the word "race" itself first appeared in the English language, the concept of race is ancient. The first poster may be correct, although they should cite a source. Ancient Greek writers did touch on the subject of racial differences. To them, these differences were a result largely of climate and ecology, not of genetics (of which they knew nothing). The Romans had similar ideas, believing the environment a people lived in could cause them to be brave, tough, stupid, intelligent, cowardly, untrustworthy, etc.

    The word "race", comes from the Old Italian word, 'razza', which means, a generation!
