Do you prefer the character of the old homes or the convenience of the new construction?

And when was your house built? (you can give a year or estimate)

Thanks!

  1. 1890, I love old farmhouses.

  2. My current house was built in 1976 with a full basement added about 5 years ago. The house I'm looking at buying is from 1952, I LOVE the style of it. I'm really not that into new houses...they look like they've been stamped out of a cookie-cutter.

  3. My husbands grandfather built our house in 1944 with his own hands.  It has been added onto over the years, but it is still your typical farmhouse.

  4. I built it in 1970.The only way to get what you want is to do it yourself. And no I don't like the new multi level roof design(ugly) or the "new" pep plumbing junk(copper or pvc is best)In short the only way I'd own a new house is if it were free.I've seen them being built.

  5. I love older architecture, but older homes can be problematic when things start to break down. So, I got the best of both worlds. My house was originally built in 1946. I even have a picture of the hillside my house was built on from about 1950, where there's only about 20 houses in a neighborhood that now has over 150.

In 2006/2007, I spent about $300,000 completely rebuilding the house. I had it gutted, all utilities completely replaced, put on an extension, and changed the layout around to take advantage of two rooms with panoramic views of Mission Bay in San Diego. It now has an effective build date of 2007, but I didn't change the basic styling of the architecture from the original 1946 design.

  6. It was Built 10 years ago and I regret buying it. It looks like a typical US family home. I should have bought an old cookie house in an old upscale neighborhood. They have character and fun to re-decor and even re-model. Think about this.... an old home with wood floors and french doors you add later. An old home with state of the art kitchens and so on. Hum... I need to sell my house...
