  3. The simple answer is that we burn fuels to create heat and pressurized gases. The heat produced by the combustion process is used almost exclusively to produce gases under pressure. This is especially true of water being turned to steam that drives turbines, and of the gases produced by burning gasoline and diesel fuel in internal combustion engines.

    All fossil and other carbon-based fuels can be summarized by the simple equation
    C + O2 ---> CO2
    but the actual chemical equations of combustion are much more complicated.

    Because the fuel is consumed in the combustion reaction and so is turned into something else entirely the mass of fuel does not stay the same. It goes down and down until the fuel has been completely used up.

    The biggest problems with burning fossil fuels are that they are first and foremost non-renewable. They represent a vast amount of CO2 that has been isolated from the environment for a long time and even though all that CO2 was in the environment at one time its quick release back into the environment through human activity might cause some problems. (It is probably NOT the cause of 'global warming' however, despite the popularity of that view...). More importantly, fossil fuels contain a great deal of contaminants such as sulfur that also end up in the environment and have significant bad effects there. Look up what happened over the 50 years that people added lead compounds to gasoline to make it burn better, and later replaced it with manganese compounds. These are far more worrisome than CO2.
