When we talk about great quarterbacks, why is Steve Young often left out?

where do u guys think he ranks?

It's because  he was a back up for a few years and because no one really talks about his Tampa or USFL days.

He was a very good QB.

But, there have been many very good QBs.

He doesn't get a lot of recognition because he never ever could get out of the shadow of Montana.

Part of the problem is his start with the USFL and then his time in Tampa Bay, that hurts his status as far as a great QB during hiw WHOLE career.

Because he had to follow the legacy of Joe Montana and when anyone talks about a great 49er QB they always think Montana..

i always place him number 2 behind montana on the top 5

because he won a superbowl

had to deal with being in the shadow of the greatest qb of all time

he retired with the best qb rating all time

he is the most accurate qb in history

he holds running qb records

he was a great guy and great teammate

to the guy that said ne he never got out of montana's shadow is wrong

steve set nfl records and won a superbowl

how is that not getting out of a shadow?

maybe he should of won 3 more just to show he's better?

There are a couple reasons:

1) He took over a team that was already built to have great success.

2) Compared to the other legendary QBs of the game, his window of greatness was far smaller.  He only had 6-7 years that his career (and a majority of his stats) was really based on. The other guys that often come up in the great QB discussion (Favre, Marino, Unitas, Elway, Montana, etc...) all had well over a decade of great play.

Because he was in the shadow of the great Joe Montana.  When you talk about great QB's, you usually have to be the best ever, without a doubt on your team first.  Look at the Cowboys.  Aikman is never mentioned as a great QB, because he is always compared to Roger Staubach.
